Required Documents Checklist for Studying in China

Almost every delayed admission we see traces back to documents rather than qualifications. This checklist follows the order in which you will actually need each item.

Stage 1 — Application documents

• Passport bio-data page, colour scan, valid for at least 12 months beyond intended entry.
• Highest academic certificate, notarised, with certified English or Chinese translation.
• Complete academic transcripts, notarised and translated.
• Language proficiency: IELTS, TOEFL, HSK certificate, or medium-of-instruction letter.
• Recommendation letters — two, signed, stamped and dated within the last six months.
• Study plan or personal statement.
• Passport-sized photograph on a white background.
• Curriculum vitae for postgraduate applicants.

Stage 2 — Health and background

• Foreigner Physical Examination Form, completed and stamped by an authorised hospital. Valid for six months.
• Blood test results and chest X-ray report accompanying the form.
• Police clearance or non-criminal record certificate, usually valid for six months.

Stage 3 — Financial evidence

• Bank statement or sponsor's statement showing sufficient funds, generally the equivalent of USD 4,000–6,000.
• Sponsorship letter with the sponsor's identification, where a parent or guardian funds the studies.
• Scholarship award letter, where applicable, which replaces most financial evidence.

Stage 4 — Visa documents

1. 1Admission Notice issued by the university, original or certified copy.
2. 2JW202 form (university-issued) or JW201 form (government-scholarship students).
3. 3Completed visa application form COVI.
4. 4Physical examination form, still within validity.
5. 5Passport, photograph and visa fee.

Stage 5 — On arrival in China

• University registration within the dates on the Admission Notice.
• Temporary residence registration at the local police station within 24 hours of arrival.
• Medical re-examination at the local entry-exit inspection bureau.
• Residence permit application within 30 days of entry — this is a legal obligation, not an option.
