The China Student Visa (X1 and X2): A Complete Application Guide

The student visa is the most procedural stage of the journey, and therefore the most predictable — provided you understand which visa you need and prepare the file exactly as the embassy expects it.

X1 or X2?

• X1 visa — for study programmes longer than 180 days. It is a single-entry visa valid for 30 days after arrival, within which you must convert it into a residence permit.
• X2 visa — for programmes of 180 days or less, typically short language or exchange programmes. No residence permit conversion is required.
• Degree students almost always need the X1.

Documents for the application

3. 3Recent passport photograph meeting Chinese visa specifications.

5. 5Original JW202 or JW201 form.

Process and timing

• Applications are lodged at a Chinese Visa Application Service Centre or embassy, usually by appointment.
• Standard processing takes four working days; express services are available at additional cost.
• Apply four to six weeks before departure. Do not book non-refundable flights before the visa is issued.
• Some applicants are asked brief questions about their programme, funding and intended city. Answer consistently with your documents.

After you arrive

1. 1Register your address with the local police within 24 hours; university dormitories usually handle this for you.
2. 2Complete the medical re-examination arranged by the university.
3. 3Submit the residence permit application through the university's international office within 30 days.
4. 4Collect the residence permit, which typically allows multiple entries for the duration of your study year.
