Chinese University Rankings: How to Read Them, and What They Miss

Rankings are useful shorthand and poor decision-making tools. Understanding the Chinese system's own designations will tell you more than any global table.

The domestic designations

• Project 985 — a historic designation for a small group of universities selected for world-class investment, including Tsinghua, Peking, Fudan, Zhejiang and Shanghai Jiao Tong.
• Project 211 — a wider group of roughly 100 universities designated for national key development.
• Double First-Class — the current framework that replaced both, recognising universities and, importantly, individual disciplines for world-class status.

The Double First-Class discipline list is the most practically useful document for an applicant. A university outside the global top 500 may hold a Double First-Class designation in exactly the field you intend to study, with the laboratories and funding that come with it.

What global rankings measure

QS and Times Higher Education weight research citations, international faculty ratios and reputation surveys. None of these directly measure teaching quality on an English-taught bachelor's programme, the strength of the international student office, or graduate employment outcomes in your home region.

Better criteria for choosing

1. 1Is your specific programme taught in a language you can study in, for its full duration?
2. 2Does the department hold a Double First-Class or national key laboratory designation in your field?
3. 3How many international students are already enrolled, and from where?
4. 4Does the university hold scholarship quota, and at what level?
5. 5What is the city like — cost, climate, transport links, size of the international community?
6. 6What do graduates from your country do after the degree?
